Getting My MBA at 48

This is the Start

This is my first post, of an idea about sharing with you my journey into receiving my Master of Business Administration, MBA through Western Governors University, www.wgu.edu an on-line University.

I am 47 right now, by next July 2010 I will have been 48 for 6 months. In some circles pretty young.

A little bit of background, last September 2008, I had just been put back on Reserves because my airline along with all the others were reducing flights during one our country worse economic downturns. I am a Flight Attendant.

I read the article, called the University, applied and was accepted and started 1 January 2009. Now I am sure some of you out there are saying sure an on-line school those are easy nothing like the brick and mortar schools.

But now a days at the brick and mortar, you had your assignments via on-line same as what I do, research at the library and or on-line same as I do for my online classes. In some ways I think that it is easier to go to a brick and mortar vs on-line university. I am just finishing up this semester and since I pay by semester I am getting ahead in my classes. I did my final a couple weeks back for Advanced Leadership and Professionalism Concepts, you talk about tough it was grad classes are suppose to be and I am glad that WGU works on keeping them update and challenging. Without going into to many details I wrote 5 essays all 5-10 pages and following APA Formatting and Style Guide. I have to say that my writing skills have been improving.

For the semester final I am sure everyone out there thinks “Oh, on-line school just go to the website and do the test at your leisure” Nothing of the sort, I went to a teaching center  Sylvan Learning Center, (or any university or college near you) I signed in and was supervised while taking the final. I for one am glad of this that WGU takes the steps to insure honest and fair testing.

A challenging final but I am happy I passed I know I need to study more because I like to be the best.

I am now on to classes for next semester (in this semester) Cases in Advanced Human Resource Management. It great so far 10 chapters to read, each chapter has on-line study questions and on-line Skillport e-learning and there are 2-3 for each chapter. After I get that finished I have a 7-10 page essay on a case study that interact with what I have read. I try to spend as much time as I can doing all this, it is expected that you spend at least 5 hours a day of 25 hours a week studying.

Awe that is easy right, but remember I am not a a brick and mortar university, I am at a on-line university and I have to work most everyday flying across the country. I just got back from Maui, Hawaii the flight leaves at 10:00 pm at night (if you did not get rest at sometime during the day it makes for a long night) arrived into Phoenix, AZ around 6:00 am waited for my flight home to San Francisco ( got a little reading done) got to my house at 11:00 am.

Sounds great and fun (it is really) but I have to get things done at the house (chores) and study because tomorrow I have to be at the San Francisco airport at 11:00 am to fly back to work.

Not your typical 9-5 school day.
