GMAT, Taking it Twice to Improve Score for a Better Job

Ok this one I am on the fence about, this article

“GMAT: The MBA Job Seekers Best Friend” by Anne VanderMey for Business Week

It a great article about how recruiters when looking at resumes if the applicants are close the will look at the GMAT it also talks about that a GMAT isn’t going to get you the job but it could stop you from getting in the door.

So most schools are recommending if your score is in the 600 to retake, because most “TOP-SHELF” employers look at  above 700.

Ok I am all for better scores and better education, but just because I score good on a test doesn’t mean I will be the biggest and brightest in the course nor does it mean that I can transfer what I know from the test to working application. So just retaking the GMAT for a better score, is more padding your score than actual knowledge.

Now I only say this because during my military days there were soldiers that could ace the test and knew the books like the back of their hand, but when it came time for them to apply it to fixing the F-16 they were all thumbs. Most of these guys actually caused more work for themselves during the actual physical work.

Yet they were the ones that passed all the test and got promoted the fasted.

They were book smart yet lacked common sense or practical ability. Even today as I watch some of these so-called top businessmen as they try and stow their luggage on an aircraft, they have no common sense or spacial recognition.

So to me it comes down to yeah I might have only a … on the GMAT but can you apply what you know. Do you know how to use, in many different situations what you have learned or do you apply just the text book answer to the problem and leave it.

Just as when we a going to buy a car for our family, we know that a drag-racer can only go really fast in a straight line and others go fast in circles. Yet we buy an automobile with the many different feature it has and will afford me with different uses.

To me there are many different kinds of intelligence, how we use them congruently with all our other abilities is what counts.

Pass my Advanced Business Concepts/Management and Strategy Test

Yeah, I passed my ABC 1 Test (Advanced Business Concepts/Management and Strategy)

There was a couple of sections I didn’t do so well in, thats ok I can read later. Now I am off to my next class Cases in Marketing Management (MAP 1)

I have one case essay to write, don’t know what else or how long I have to print out the syaullbus to see. I am shooting for having this done before 15 Nov, so I can start on Cases in Advanced Accounting. To get a head start and have it finished by the beginning of the new year (mid Jan)

I don’t have my Marketing book with me, I’ll have to wait till tomorrow when I get back to the house to start into it.

Today is going to be spent catching up on all the things I have been putting off because of studying.

After the Test, then Flying

I got up at 7:00 a.m. and spent the morning going over notes stretching and doing some meditation . I just spent yesterday ALL day from 8:00 a.m. till 2:00 a.m. studying my but off.

I did have to fly home yesterday and it was a delayed flight, but just more study time.

After I got home just me, B-Tribe and all my notes

WOW! I must say tough test, it is more from the amount (volume) than I had to study, which lead to only 86 good questions.

I took my time, read each one, then before each section was complete I when back and reread and rechecked my answers. I did change a few, but I won’t know if I change to correct or incorrect answers.

I took almost the whole required time,(2:10 hours of the 3:00 hours allotted) and felt walking out good about the test.

After I had to get ready for work to fly into Phoenix on the 5:15 p.m. flight because scheduling put me on Stand-by B again (7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.)

Packed my bags and headed to the airport.

Studying or Money

I got back early from my trip, around 8:00 a.m. surprisingly I didn’t get tagged. So I thought I would stay in Phoenix and try and pick up a trip on Friday-Saturday. I need the extra money.

So I went to my friend’s house and did my laundry (it is a lot cheaper there), I was checking out my school and have gotten assigned my test date for ABC1,

5 days earlier than I thought, nooo

So decision time Money or Studying? I need the money really bad, things are getting tight, but I can’t afford to fail.

I refuse to fail this test, and class.

So I am doing the choice which I feel is the best. I got on a plane and headed home to San Francisco.

I have been working most of the night on my notes, I am up to 28 pages. I am sure that when I am done I will have well over a hundred pages.

After this writing I will get some sleep and get early and crank out more.

I was reading an article about MBA’s on FT and it says that schools are having record numbers enrolling in school, Great at least I’ll be a year and a half a head of them.

There was an article in CNN, where was talking about WallStreet was still hiring freshly minted MBAs’, companies are still hiring. Not sure if I want WallStreet, but I am narrowing down where I do want to be.

Both articles are promising.

On the flight home I had a really nice conversation with a Lawyer who wife actually worked in the accounting department in the same company I work.
